Computer memory technology hasn't changed much in the last few years. This situation might not last long, though, because a graduate student at Rice University, Jun Yao (top), may just be on the right track on discovering the workings and intricacies of what could be the new computer memory of the 21st century. Yao had been using graphite in his project and what he discovered caused quite a stir. He found out that by the simple application of voltage, nanocrystalline pathways could be created in silicon oxide, an insulator in the graphite. Low voltage pulses (3.5 and 8 volts) could open and close the pathways, conveniently allowing for a switching effect. The phenomenon essentially made a two-terminal resistive memory bit (5 nanometers wide) possible.

Yao's discovery may soon become the basis for high-capacity 3D memory chips. But Yao isn't alone in the endeavor or competition to release the first of such a chip. Yao's argument is that the silicon dioxide in graphite that what will make 3D memory chips possible. Initially, there was critical resistance to his ideas, but he sold the concept nevertheless. It all began when he was assisting chemist James Tour in ones of the Rice labs with a graphitic memory project when he thought of removing the graphite and was surprised to discover that the circuit still worked.

Yao recounted how he became surprised and excited about the discovery. He emailed his superior and the following day, "the prolonged debates over the mechanism between me and the graphitic guys began," he said. With most of his colleagues unconvinced, Yao spent months experimenting. He combined silicon oxide with every material he could find, trying to determine if there was some other factor that he missed, but "they all worked," he said, "because the silicon oxide was carrying the load." What was happening in the silicon oxide was that a strong electrical pulse between semiconducting silicon strips off oxygen atoms, producing the nanoscale bit between the terminals that following pulses could switch on and off. Yao is currently working on making his silicon oxide memory more visually understandable.

Braille Internet Pages for the Blind

Those who are visually-impaired may now be able to surf the Internet just like normal seeing people with a new technology based on the one-liner Braille system used to translate text from the computer into raised Braille dots. Lead inventor Dr. Peichun Yang is perfecting the system at the Carolina State University. He says the while the current one line refreshable Braille device (left) is already useful, improving it and enabling it to display a whole page brings in another world from the Internet to blind people.

Yang, who is blind himself, said the new Braille technology will allow whole pages of from the Internet to be displayed using raised dots to form text and even images. The system is fast and can refresh in just milliseconds. It's able to be so fast because it uses a hydraulic and latching mechanism combined. This is what raises the thousands of dots which serve as the "pixels" of the display. In a way, they create a form of bas relief to represent visual images that can be touched by the visually-impaired.

Each dot (represented above in the graphics) is like a small bag than can shift its shape. Each bag is filled with a liquid. With the application of an electric current, each bag is compressed and the liquid inside is pushed up, creating a bump that "registers" as a pixel or dot. The technology has been used before but it had limitations. The problem that Yang solved involved creating a "latch" for the raised container which kept it in place as the blind reader moves his or her fingers over them and until the pressure needs to be released. The tiny mechanism has a pin that is connected to a support block. The pin keeps the dot raised until the page is refreshed.

Yang hopes to the the technology out for the blind to use soon but it may be best to have materials that will last long enough for the device to be used for a long time until breaking down from too much touching. This is a common problem with polymer-based materials. Yang and colleagues presented the new technology at the International Conference on Electroactive Polymer Actuators and Devices in San Diego, California.

What Is Mirasol Display Technology?

There's a new display technology for e-book readers that could one day be adapted to displays of cell phones and even large gadgets like television sets.

The invention's advantages over liquid crystal display (LCD) screens and others currently used include extremely low power consumption, readability under direct sunlight, and bright colors. It's called the Mirasol or interferometric modulation (IMOD) display. It's a micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) device from Qualcomm MEMS Technologies.

The Mirasol display technology is actually a state-of-the-art biomimetics system for displaying images and video. Being biomimetic, this technology is derived from nature, specifically the scales on butterfly wings which reflect light to produce iridescence. Each IMOD element of the display is made of two plates that manage reflected light by changing the gap between them, producing different colors. Each IMOD element serves as a microscopic pixel that changes color. COmbined with millions of pixels, an image is created.

Unlike LCD screens, which produce light from electricity, a Mirasol display produces images largely from the ambient light that it reflects back. The result is a display with a lightning-fast refresh rate, readability in both low-light and extreme light conditions, and thinner-than-LCD display casings.

The low energy requirements of Mirasol displays allow battery life expectancy measured in weeks, not hours or days. This long battery life increases options for features and allows for long video playback not possible with regular LCD screens. The developers say the technology is also scalable, which means it can be applied to larger devices in the future as the technology develops.

For now, Mirasol display technology is being used for e-readers. It is envisioned to be a substitute for paper and is expected to open new doors in the publishing industry, paving the way for compact, thin, and light e-readers with access to information that people can take practically anywhere.

The basic technique of extracting hydrogen from urine uses electrolysis. This process breaks down urine's main component, urea, producing useful hydrogen. Gerardine Botte, the lead researcher, says that urea gets adsorbed on to the nickel electrode surface of an electrolytic setup. This then relays the electrons needed to break down the molecule.

Botte says one cow (or the urine from one) is enough to heat the water of 19 houses. So ten cows, including bulls, can heat up to a hundred houses. That's already the size of a village! Animals are urine factories, dumping tons and tons of it into the environment. In cities, especially in depressed areas, the smell of human urine can be prevalent. If the urine from all the urinals in a city can be collected, that's probably enough to provide a big percentage of energy to the overall requirement of the whole city. In the future, the hydrogen that will be used for fuel in automobiles may be coming from urine.

The nanotechnology world may be set up for a boost with the new discovery that light, such as infrared, creates a pushing or pulling force when split into two beams that each travel on a different length of silicon nanowire, called a wave guide (as illustrated in the above photo). Because the beams are not in phase, they create a repulsive force that is adjustable. The more out of phase the rays are, the greater the force.

The new technology might give you images of Iron Man with his repulsor beams and Luke Skywalker with his light saber, but the phenomenon behind it does not work in free space, according to Mo Li, a postdoctoral associate in electrical aengineering at Yale University. Li says it only works when light is confined in the nanoscale waveguides that are placed very close to each other on the chip.

The engineers see this new light-force technology could pave the way for nanodevices that are controlled by light instead of electrical switches, the latest of which are made possible with semiconductors. It is believed that light switches will make future gadgets and devices like computers lighter and cooler, both literally and figuratively.

The storage capacity of optical discs seem to grow by the decade. In the next one, we'd probably see optical discs - DVDs in particular, that are able to store up to 10 terabytes of information. If you can't imagine how much that is, try to imagine your DVD holding up to 3000 full-feature movies - now there's your 10 terabytes!

Right now, it may only be possible to make a DVD version that stores up to 1 terabyte or 300 movies. We have researchers at Swinburne University of Technology in Australia to thank for this new and monstrous storage capacity for optical discs, which is now currently in the Blu-ray technology level.

The new storage system for optical discs will be using nanotechnology where gold particles will play a part in harnessing what they call the polarization dimension of an optical disc. Researcher Min Gu has this to say: "We were able to show how nanostructured material can be incorporated onto a disc in order to increase data capacity, without increasing the physical size of the disc."

Current optical discs have three spatial dimensions but nanoparticles will allow a spectral and a polarization dimension that can be used to store data as well, boosting capacity tremendously. However, these new discs may need a new gadget to play in. When they are released, people will certainly have another fancy thing to toy with.

First there was the light bulb. Then came the long fluorescent tube lights. Now it seems that lights will soon come as sheets that you can stick to surfaces. New light technology using aluminum foil sheets now make this possible. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign produced the sheet lighting by simply immersing aluminum foil from the grocery store in an acid bath which gave it a mesh of holes, and in the process, also turning the aluminum into sapphire (an aluminum oxide) that allows electricity to flow through the sheet without breaking down the structure.

The aluminum-sapphire sheet is then sealed between two sheets of thin glass with the spaces made by the holes filled with a gas. When electricity is made to flow through the contraption, plasma is created in the gas-filled microscopic holes, producing light. The lead researcher, Gary Eden, says that the light it makes is brighter and uses less energy than incandescent bulbs. The product is also extremely cheap and even disposable. The sheet light is less than a millimeter thick with the glass forming the bulk.

How a New Device Can Predict Preference for Drinks

There is an invention that works like a mind reader out there. It's really a device that specifically predicts the kind of drink you will choose as demonstrated in laboratory experiments by Sheena Luu, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering at the University of Toronto. So far, it is 80 percent accurate, which is enough to say that it is like a mind-reading device or gadget.

In the experiment, the subjects were first made to rate drinks on a scale of one to five. Then, they were made to wear a headband. They were then presented with two drinks to choose from on a computer monitor one after the other. Then they were then asked to mentally choose one. Later, the device was used again, but this time, it's to predict which drink will be chosen. It's able to do so with 80 percent accuracy.

The secret behind the cool device? Well, the headband was used to measure near infrared wave activity of the brains of the subjects as they made their decisions in the second phase of the experiment. According to Luu, when the brain is active, the oxygen in the blood increases, and, depending on the concentration, absorbs more or less light. She adds that in some people, the brains are more active when they don't like something, and in others, they're more active when they do like something.

The new skin-adornment technology is part of the Probe Project's emphasis for this year called SKIN which uses emotionally-sensitive materials that come in contact with human skin. One product is called the electronic tattoo, and it can supposedly change shape depending on a person's emotional state. It comes in the form of a film that is laid over the skin as a kind of "second skin." It's practically invisible and if you have seen how liquid crystal images behave, then you have an idea of what it can do to turn your body into a dynamic art form.

The Design Probes Project goes beyond tattoos, though, and it's also envisioned clothes that change color (left; girl pretending to be a lamp). Since 1931, when the first portable metal detector was patented, the growth in the use of metal detectors has steadily increased. Metal detectors are every where. There are both industrial, commercial and personal use of metal detectors. When most people think of metal detectors they think of the guy on the beach with a set of head phones swinging back and forth a funny looking stick. People that use metal detectors to look for lost relics or treasure are known as treasure hunters, or relic hunters.

How do metal detectors work? What wondrous magic do they use to see through the ground and point us to what we are looking for. The principles behind metal detectors are fairly simple. The first metal detector was invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1881. Although the principles a simple their use in the invention were ingenious especially for the time.

Metal detectors can be used to find all sorts of metal in anything but other metal. There are metal detectors designed for specific terrain; for instance under water. The reason for this will become apparent when we talk about how they actually work. Metal detectors are designed to detect shifts in electromagnetism in metal. This is accomplished by transmitting a magnetic field through the target surface. As the magnetic field passes over an area metal objects in the area will become magnetically charged. These changes in electromagnetism are detected in by a receiver attached to the metal detector in very much the same way radar detects aircraft in the sky. Once a shift in the magnetic field is detected then a signal is sent to a speaker to notify the operator that a piece of metal has been detected. With older metal detectors different types of metal could not be differentiated between. But, today's metal detectors can determine the difference between different types of metal and signal to the operator which type it is. Higher metal detectors can actual be programmed to only search for a specific type of metal.

The magnetic field of a metal detector can be generated in many different ways. But, there are three specific ways that modern metal detectors generate this field. First would be via a pulse and if there is an echo of the pulse detected then you have found some treasure. The second way is through what is known as beat frequency. With beat frequency two oscillators are used to create different but close frequencies. When an audible beat is detected between them then metal has been found.

The third and final detective device uses measuring sine waves. When there is no metal in the area the sine waves are flat like a lake on a windless day. When there is a shift in the magnetic field indicating a change in magnetism the sine waves bounce to indicate that metal has been found.

Although some of this really sounds very scientific, it really is not very difficult to understand. The basic mechanics behind a metal detector is that it plays on metals ability to become magnetized and then measures those changes to determine where the metal is and what type of metal it is.

Before the creation of binaural beats recordings, the only means to induce specific changes in your brainwave states was by learning deep meditation. Although it is easily done now with binaural beats.

The concept of binauarl beats was discovered by an Assosiate Professor at the University of Berlin in 1839 called Heinrich Wilhelm Dove. Prof Dove discovered that when 2 similar sounds, but are different slighly in frequency, are offered separately to left and right ear (Binaural) they will create a pulse or beat type effect to be present in the brain - binaural beats.

It was in the late '70s when Scientific American published the research paper by Dr. Gerald Oster titled "Auditory Beats in the Brain" which was about binaural beats. This report outlined how Dr. Oster used Dove's discovery and through research found that by using these binaural beats he could direct the entire brainwave pattern of the listener to match the internal beat created by the binaural beats. When this occurred the brainwaves of the listener changed to resonate to the same frequency as the binaural beats. Thus Oster found that through the type of recording used in binaural beats he was able to alter the brain's frequencies of the listener and induce intentional cerebral states.

For the ordinary man or woman on the street the use of binaural beats would just be another scientific experiment which has no impact or bearing ona person's life or everyday routines if it was not for the fact that this technology can be used in a very practical way. Many times the goals you strive for are reliant on the state your brainwaves are in at that moment. Each of your activities has a dominant brainwave pattern connected with it.

When you're in a state of deep relaxation, when sleeping, your brain has a specific frequency associated with it and displays specific patterns such as Theta waves. When you become driven and energized your brain is engaged in Beta or even Gamma frequencies. These patterns are easy to induce by using binaural beats.

If you evoke a state of relaxed focus like when you're captivated by TV, visualizing or while under the influence of hypnosis, you enter the Alpha state. This is also the state that is entered into with most forms of meditation. However people who meditate for years, just like a Zen Buddhist Monk, are able to enter Theta and Delta states while being able to stay highly aware. This can also be done by using binaural beats!

Did you know that radar was developed and first tested in Suffolk between the two World Wars? Today you can visit the place where much of the ground breaking work in radar technology took place. RAF Bawdsey, operational in 1937, was the first of a chain of radar stations to be built around the coast of Britain. During the Battle of Britain with 2,600 Luftwaffe planes to the RAF's 640, it was the use of radar for detecting aircraft en route to the UK so they could be intercepted that saved the day.

History of Bawdsey Radar Station

Following the First World War, protecting the UK from attack was discussed at great length. But it was not until 1934, when an air-defence exercise to test defence was carried out that things really started to get going.

Although the targets and routes of the exercise were known, more than half the bombers managed to get through to their targets. This led to the Air Ministry looking at the idea of radio "death rays" which would eliminate or disable pilots and their aircraft. The Scots physicist Robert Watson-Watt, supervisor of a national radio research laboratory and descendant of James Watt, inventor of the first practical steam engine, was contacted and asked for his views.

Watson-Watt dismissed the idea of death rays but said that radio beams could be bounced off enemy aircraft to detect them. He then drew up a memo outlining his ideas and although it was met with enthusiasm, proof that the system could work was demanded.

On 26 February 1935, Watson-Watt and Arnold Wilkins successfully demonstrated their system using a BBC transmitter which managed to pick up a bomber being used as a test target.

In May 1935 Watson-Watt, Wilkins and a small team of scientists moved to Orfordness to conduct a series of historic experiments over the sea that would lead to the world's first working 'RADAR' system. It soon became apparent that Orfordness was inadequate for further research and Bawdsey Manor Estate was purchased for £24,000.

In February 1936 the research scientists occupied Bawdsey Manor House and the stables and outbuildings were converted into workshops. 240ft wooden receiver towers and 360ft steel transmitter towers were built and Bawdsey became the first Chain Home Radar Station. By the outbreak of World War 2 a chain of radar stations was in place around the coast of Britain.

These radar stations were to prove invaluable during the Second World War and particularly during the Battle of Britain. With 2,600 Luftwaffe planes to the RAF's 640, it was the use of radar for detecting aircraft en route to the UK so they could be intercepted that saved the day.

Bawdsey was used as an RAF base through the Cold War until the 1990s when the Bloodhound Missile was the last 'tenant' in this base. On 31st May 1990 the Bloodhound force ceased operations and in June all the missiles were withdrawn to RAF West Raynham. The RAF Ensign was lowered for the last time on the 25th March 1991 and the station closed on the 31st March.

Sadly, the last of the giant transmitter masts came down in 2000, but you can still see photos and exhibits from the stations working days, including -

The exhibition tells the story of a technology and an institution which helped win a war - and shape our future. It reveals how scientists came together in total secrecy before World War 2 to prove that radio waves could locate aeroplanes, ships and other targets and how their invention dramatically affected the course of the conflict. It explains how their work laid the foundations for the age of electronics and the computer.

The exhibition was designed by David Robertson, a communications professional specialising mainly in science and technology, as a touring exhibition for the Millennium celebrations in Malvern. It has also been on display at Bletchley Park and more recently at the Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovilton.
